Just found this link to a very helpful book based on a lead that my Professor gave me… direction for developing a good graphic design thesis. Side note: I’ve decided to post all of my inspirations and visual stories (assignments for Directed Research) on this blog as a record of the process.

For my texture/pattern studies I’m using three color schemes: Warm analagous (Y-YO-O), Split complementary (Y-RV-BV), and neutrals. I’m not sure what the difference is between neutrals that are created from the complementary color vs. neutrals created from adding grey, or if there even is a difference. hmm.

These are the split complementary relationships, triad, and warm and cool analagous sets. Also I’ve been thinking a lot about the book and I’m not sure a book is the best form for what I want to do. I decided to use triangles because they represent the color yellow and sunlight. There are hexagons in the pattern and the unit becomes a hexagon when all of the shapes are placed together, but I like what’s happening when there is some space between the shapes near the bottom. Tonight I decided to work on a triad color combination: yellow, red and blue. I did a few sketches with acrylic paint using different proportions of the three hues.

In class last week I presented the mock up of my color book, and I realized that I’m communicating two themes – sun and lemon.
